  • LittWorld 2012: Christian Publishers Worldwide to Convene in Nairobi, Kenya

    MAI is pleased to announce LittWorld 2012 will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, October 28 to November 2, 2012. “MAI returns to Africa with the goal of building on momentum from the 2009 conference, which ranked among the best so far, and to increase our training support on the continent,” said MAI president John Maust.

    Every three years, MAI convenes LittWorld, the only international conference of its kind, providing intensive training on strategic, publishing-related topics. The conference gathers more than 150 publishers, editors and writers from 30-plus countries.

    LittWorld 2012 will include a weekend pre-conference exclusively for Africa’s French-speaking Christian publishing staff and writers. Confirmed speaker Daniel Bourdanné, general secretary of IFES and former publisher said, “I feel very encouraged to know you are planning to come back to Africa in 2012. This will certainly help build momentum for the publishing work in Africa, which remains fragile.”

    The African Church increases annually faster than anywhere else in the world. But many African believers lack Christian literature written by Africans. The continent is also the world's youngest region; children under 15 make up more than 40 percent of its people. Enormous potential exists to bolster the Church and reach a new generation via life-giving books and articles.

    Men and women from 94 countries have participated in the conference since it began in 1986. Through LittWorld, MAI has seen publishing houses born, new books conceived, and skills refined for more effective publishing. Inevitably, participants take away a new or reinforced commitment to publish books and articles by local authors in the heart language and culture of readers.

    CIMMYT is an internationally funded, non-profit research and training organization affiliated with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The center works to sustainably increase the productivity of maize and wheat farming systems, thus helping to ensure global food security and to reduce poverty. Its partners include national agricultural research systems, non-governmental organizations, and advanced research institutions, both public and private, in globally-focused projects and programs. CIMMYT employs about 600 permanent staff and operates through decentralized partnerships, with offices in 13 developing countries and projects and networks in many more. In Kenya, CIMMYT is hosted by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in Nairobi.

    The Position

    CIMMYT seeks a talented, dedicated Science Writer/Editor to help reach external audiences with pertinent technical and general information about its research maize, wheat, socioeconomics, and conservation agriculture, with special focus on sub-Saharan Africa. The Science Writer/Editor will be based at CIMMYT’s office in Nairobi, Kenya.

    Responsibilities

    The Science Writer/Editor will edit technical scientific publications, grant proposals, and other technical information; and write and edit non-technical material intended to increase public awareness of CIMMYT’s activities, as required.

    The specific responsibilities include:

    * Help develop diverse communications products, including the corporate annual report, project brochures, funding proposals, policy briefs, technical bulletins, scientific books and chapters, journal- and magazine articles, and varied content for web pages.
    * Edit scientific articles, technical reports, and other documents for accuracy, clarity, style, and usage.
    * Identify high interest stories throughout the Centre’s research programs and write and/or edit stories in a range of styles for dissemination in suitable formats and to various target audiences.
    * Participate in communications planning and strategy development.
    * Support and guide media outreach.
    * Support and guide extension communications.
    * As required, travel to document CIMMYT’s work on the ground, including field visits and taking still and video photography.
    * Assist scientists in preparing scientific posters, presentations, and other materials.
    * Select and provide photographs for use in publications and presentations.
    * Assist in preparing presentations for scientific conferences and meetings.

    Qualifications and Experience

    * Minimum a BA or BSc in communications, journalism, literature, science, agriculture, or another relevant field, and preferably 4-5 years of work experience relating to the position.
    * Strong, proven skills in English writing and grammar.
    * Fluency in English and Kiswahili; working knowledge of French and/or Spanish desirable.
    * A capacity to understand processes and issues related to science and technology; with a focus on issues affecting agriculture and development in sub-Saharan Africa.
    * Ability to write/edit under pressure, with high accuracy and to deadline.
    * Creativity, particularly in devising new approaches to publications content.
    * Ability to work in a team of professionals from many countries and cultures.
    * Willingness to travel within the region and, occasionally, internationally.

  • Job Opening: Communications Consultant for United Nations Development Programme (Kenya/ Somalia)

    Somalia is currently in a worsening humanitarian situation where an estimated 2.4 million people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. In addition, the highly volatile security situation in south central Somalia has led the UN to focus on delivering much needed humanitarian assistance and to implement recovery and capacity development assistance programmes in locations that experience relative stability where access is possible.

    The UN Country Team (UNCT) needs effective communication to interact usefully with the Somalia authorities and communities, to reflect the evolving circumstances and to address the complexity and multi-layered nature of the UN’s role in Somalia. Good communication is also required to generate funds to address the humanitarian crisis and recovery and development needs. In particular, the UN needs its communication strategy to address the issue of expectations: what can the UN deliver and how?

    At the request of the UNCT, a joint Communications Strategy for Somalia was developed that aims to improve understanding of the perceptions and needs of the Somali people, to address existing perceptions about the UN´s work in Somalia and to improve its profile. The main objective of this strategy is to bring coherence to UN internal and external communications in order to improve the quality of the UN’s interaction with the Somali people, the perceptions of the UN in Somalia and its work (humanitarian, political and development); to support the promotion of an enabling environment for the work of the UN; to positively influence the security environment; reassert impartiality; improve credibility; to improve understanding of the UN’s work and its transparency. A UN Communication Strategy Manager will be hired to lead the implementation and adjustment of the strategy in the long term.

    The UNCT has identified an urgent need for a consultant to address immediate challenges facing the UN in Somalia. The consultant will travel to Somalia frequently in order to ensure that the perceptions of the Somali people are heard and heeded, that the work of the UN is better understood and is promoted in both local and international media. An immediate focus will be responding to and addressing negative publicity regarding the UN and alleged lack of response. The medium term focus will be establishing communications approaches and techniques that listen effectively to the Somali people and communicate clearly the streamlined work of the United Nations agencies, funds and programmes under the UN Somali Assistance Strategy.

    The UN Communications Consultant will lead with the UN Information Group and work in close collaboration with its individual members, the Resident Coordinator’s Office and OCHA, as well as with key media personnel to ensure that the joint UN Communications Strategy is implemented in a timely manner and in line with the evolving situation in Somalia. The UN Communications Consultant will report to the Head of the RCO and through her to the UN Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator and the UNCT.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Summary of Key Functions:

    * Improve the UN’s communications with Somali speaking audiences.
    * Produce targeted material to improve the perceptions of the work of the UN in Somalia.
    * Arrange visits of local and international media to UN projects across Somalia.
    * Oversee and publicise the UNCT’s work on UN days.

    Functions / Key Results Expected:

    1. Improve media coverage of the UN in the three Somali regions:

    * Arrange visits of local Somali media to UN project sites to demonstrate the value of the work of the United Nations agencies, funds and programmes to the Somali people especially in relation to the current drought and the political situation.
    * Target local media outlets in the three Somali zones with regular UNSAS outcome update briefings that summarise the UN’s work under the three Outcomes of the United Nations Somali Assistance Strategy (UNSAS).
    * Assess the information needs of the UN’s Somali interlocutors and provide easily digestible updates for use by national counterparts – governments, donors and other key partners - to explain the achievements of the United Nations under the UNSAS.

    2. Somali communications:

    * Oversee the translation of the UNCT website into Somali language and post regular updates, news stories and Somali language radio pod casts.
    * Work with IRIN and other Somali-language radio services to maximise the impact of UN advocacy.
    * Issue monthly updates of UN Information Group master messages and Questions & Answers to ensure coherent messages are communicated by all UN Agencies.

    3. International English-language media and communications:

    * Facilitate one joint visit of international media to Somalia in collaboration with UN agencies in order to allow Somali people to communicate their needs and aspirations.
    * Regularly update the UNCT website and support UN agencies to update social media platforms such as Facebook, youtube etc. with an emphasis on media used by Somali people both inside and outside Somalia.
    * Create two UN briefing packs to provide a coherent overview the work of the UN in Puntland and South Central Somalia for use with donors.
    * Issue UNCT press releases regularly to highlight progress and achievements to complement individual agency press releases.

    4. Manage UN events with partners:

    * Plan joint events with civil society groups and Government partners in each of the three zones focusing on: 19 Aug – World Humanitarian Day; 21 Sept – International Peace Day; 24 Oct – UN Day

    5. Maintain and influence networks of contacts:

    * Develop and update a UN-wide list of high-level communications contacts across five key groups: Somalis, Diaspora, Donors, International media, and internal UN audiences. This will be a key resource for the permanent communications manager when they arrive.
    * Develop key fact sheets on common UNIG advocacy issues

    Impact of Results:

    Effective implementation of the joint UN Communications Strategy leads to improved perceptions of the UN in Somalia. Better coherence among the UN Information Group results in an image of the UN in Somalia speaking as one.

    Required Skills and Experience

    Education:

    Experience:

    * Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in information, communications and media work with an international organization, with at least 4 years communications experience in a crisis or post-conflict country.
    * Management and diplomatic skills essential.
    * Prior experience working in Somalia is highly desirable.
    * Prior experience of working with complex UN rules and procedures in a UN Country Team environment is preferred.
    * Experience as a spokesperson or principal liaison with media and other key partners on sensitive issues is preferred.
    * Experience in organizing media and/or communications events.
    * Prior experience in implementing a communications strategy would be beneficial.

    Language requirements:

    * Fluency in written and spoken English is required

    On behalf of the tourism industry, Kenya Tourism Federation is introducing Kenya Tourism Awards. The goal of the awards is to recognize and encourage excellence and good practice in responsible tourism.

    Kenya Tourism Federation Secretariat is organizing the Kenya tourism industry's first national awards.

    The awards ceremony is slated for 23rd June 2011. There are 8 different award categories - 7 award categories for the tourism industry; and a Media award category - with the goal of recognizing the contribution of the media in promoting Kenya as a tourism destination of choice. There are a total of 15 awards to be won.

    Businesses and journalists who wish to participate in the set categories should submit their nominations by 5 pm on 30th April 2011, after which nominations will not be accepted. A business may nominate to be considered in more than one category.

    To nominate a business: Complete the nomination form printed in black ink, double spaced, using 12 point type. The nomination form should be accompanied by a narrative of no more than 4 pages outlining how the business fits in the specific award criteria. The nomination should also be accompanied by not more than 4 signed letters of support from persons other than the nominator.

    A business may also opt to submit along with the nomination additional support material for the nomination, such as newspaper articles, press releases, photos with captions, internal and external evaluation documents

    • linking tourism to its contribution to poverty eradication and achievement of vision 2030
    • showing diversity of tourism products; e.g. culture, beach, scenery, ecotourism
    • Expose’ on tourism or that has an effect on tourism that has elicited a positive reaction from the concerned parties /authorities. Evidence of this to be presented in follow up stories.
    • That show evidence of in depth research and creativity and portrays Kenya or a part of Kenya as a magical tourist destination

    Nomination packages should include the following:

    • A completed nomination form and an accompanying narrative of no more than 4 pages outlining how you meet award criteria.
    • Clip of minimum 1 minute stories for the last six months (TV and radio)
    • Cuttings of at least six stories with a minimum of 500 words per cutting for the last six months/ or six editions for travel magazines with (Print Media)
    • At least two, but no more than four letters of support for the nomination from persons other than the nominator. The letters of support must be signed by the author.
    • (Optional) No more than five items of additional support materials, such as newspaper articles, press releases, photos with captions, internal or external evaluation documents, etc., that support the nomination.

    Under the supervision of the project coordinator based in Nairobi, the Web Content Editor will

    · Post news, events, publications, links and similar information on IFDC MIS websites (AMITSA and AfricaFertilizer.org) using our dedicated CMS

    · Organize and manage web based tracking of interesting articles, websites, publications, events of interest for IFDC MIS websites (RSS feeds, news alerts, etc)

    · Assist the team to:

    o edit and publish AMITSA monthly newsletters (use of web based email distribution software)

    o manage email distribution lists (addition, editing, deletion, etc)

    o in the creation and maintenance of social presence of MIS websites on the web, including Facebook and Twitter accounts

    o produce success stories, interviews, posters, leaflets, brochures, user manuals, etc

    Person Profile

    - BA or BS degree, preferably in English, communications, Marketing or Journalism or a related field.

    - Experience of at least 2 years in an online editorial environment.

    - Knowledge of the agricultural environment is an advantage

    - Good command of French language is an advantage.

    - A thorough understanding of online editorial best practices and priorities, excellent writing and editing skills.

    - Ability to manage multiple assignments and tasks while meeting deadlines.

    - Experience with web content management systems (CMS) and social networks.

    - Strong computer skills, including MS Office applications.

  • 6th Lola Kenya Screen Call for Film Submissions

    The Lola Kenya Screen audiovisual media festival, skill-development mentorship programme and market for children and youth (lolakenyascreen.org) is calling upon interested participants to submit quality films to the sixth edition of the annual event that will take place August 8-13, 2011 in Nairobi, Kenya.

    Lola Kenya Screen, a Nairobi-based charity specialising in issues related to children, youth, mass media, culture and development, accepts all kinds of moving images made by professionals, students, amateurs, youth and children that focus on children, youth and family.

    Experimental films, television series, video games and even creatively packaged music videos tackling issues related to children, youth and family and that provide strong role models to children and youth while speaking positively to children of diverse backgrounds are accepted.

    Selected films are showcased under various categories with those starring children aged 6-13 years competing for the prestigious Lola Kenya Screen Golden Mboni award for the best children's film and those featuring children above 14 years competing for the Lola Kenya Screen 14-Plus Prize for the best youth film. While the Golden Mboni has been awarded since 2006, the 14-Plus award was inaugurated in 2009.

    All entries submitted must be suitable for children ages 13 and under, youth aged 14-25 years, or family (25+). The film entry form with regulations is available here. The deadline for applications is April 15, 2011.
